Chloride-induced corrosion on reinforcing steel: from the fundamentals to the monitoring techniques
نویسنده
چکیده
One of the most important causes for reinforcing steel corrosion is the presence of chloride ions. They cause localised breakdown of the passive film that initially forms on steel as a result of the alkaline nature of the pore solution in concrete. The harmful chloride ions can be originated from the use of contaminated mix constituents or from the surrounding environment. The determination of a critical level, above which serious problems can occur, has been one of the main goals of investigation. Unfortunately, it is difficult to establish such a value since the chloride level is influenced by several factors. Thus, after concrete contamination, it is of fundamental importance to follow the activity of chlorides and the state of the reinforcing rebars. In this respect, the use of electrochemical techniques such as polarisation resistance, electrochemical impedance, galvanostatic pulse and potential measurements have shown to be powerful tools. Nevertheless, the interpretation of the results becomes sometimes a difficult task. A large number of authors have dedicated several studies to the interpretation of such measurements and a highly dispersed number of interpretations can be found in literature. The aim of this paper is to present an overview on the state-of-the-art of the most important aspects of the corrosion process initiated by chlorides, its development and monitoring techniques. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Stress Corrosion Cracking Detection of Sensitized Stainless Steel 304 in Chloride Media by Using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to detect stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in stainless steel 304 alloy exposed to an aqueous environment at 120 °C. Stainless steel 304 alloy as u-bend was tested in the solution that contains 40 weight percent of magnesium chloride. U-bended samples were prepared according to ASTM G30. EIS measurements were always performed simultaneously o...
متن کاملA Galvanic Sensor for Monitoring the Corrosion Condition of the Concrete Reinforcing Steel: Relationship Between the Galvanic and the Corrosion Currents
This work reports a study carried out on the design and performance of galvanic and polarization resistance sensors to be embedded in concrete systems for permanent monitoring of the corrosion condition of reinforcing steel, aiming to establish a correlation between the galvanic currents, I(gal), and the corrosion currents, I(corr), estimated from the polarization resistance, R(p). Sensors have...
متن کاملCarbonation-induced Corrosion of Blended-cement Concrete Mix Designs for Highway Structures
Corrosion of concrete reinforcing steel in highway structures has traditionally been related to chloride ions. However, another cause of reinforcing steel corrosion is concrete carbonation which decreases the pH of the pore solution, Carbonation-induced corrosion tends to develop later and proceeds at slower rates than chloride-induced corrosion. Since very long service life goals are currently...
متن کاملStudy of Pitting Corrosion Inhibition of Mild Steel by Nitrite in Concrete Pore Solution by Polarization and Zero Resistance Ammetery (ZRA) Techniques (RESEARCH NOTE)
A research on the corrosion inhibition of mild steel pitting corrosion in concrete pore solution by sodium nitrite was carried out by employing potentiodynamic, potentiostatic polarization and zero resistance ammetery (ZRA) techniques. Passivity breakdown potential was decreased from the transpassive potential of 700 mV at the absence of chloride to a value of -50 mV when just 0.01M NaCl was ad...
متن کاملPolymer Impregnation of Concrete by Methyl Methacrylate and its Effects on Mechanical Properties and Corrosion of Steel in Concrete
Freezing and thawing resulting from the ingression of water into concrete causes cracking or spalling. Corrosive ions such as chloride or sulfate penetrate the concrete surface and eventually reach the reinforcing steel. This causes the steel to corrode. Because of the high maintenance and replacement costs, responsible officials should be increasingly concerned about the growing number...
